Ombudsman Program
Long-Term Care Ombudsman are specially trained and certified persons
who advocate for residents in nursing and adult care homes to protect
their quality of life.
Ombudsman complete a 36-hour, state approved training course.
The course includes: practical understanding and academic knowledge
of the role and responsibilities of the ombudsman. Along with the
rights of residents, understanding of the aging process and the
physical and mental problems that accompany it. The training also
includes knowledge of long-term care facilities and their regulatory
requirements, and in-depth communication skills with special emphasis
problem solving techniques.
Ombudsman devote 2-4 hours per week in an assigned facility to
serve as resident advocates and support resident autonomy, health,
safety and welfare through skilled observation, trust and understanding.
Ombudsman serve over 144,000 long-term care residents in approximately
650 nursing homes and approximately 1,200 adult care facilities,
as well as resolve issues raised by their families, guardians and
legal representatives across the state.
